Club Poona Medellin
Location : This project is located in Medellin, a large city in Colombia, unfortunately known for its drug problems.
Date of partnership with SOLIBAD : 2015
Amount invested by Solibad in this program since 2013 : €12,600
The program in detail:
Poona badminton is a club that allows about forty children, but also about twenty adults, to forget their difficult daily lives for a few hours. Its aim is to help children living in poor areas on the heights of the city.
The resources available to this club are very modest. Shuttlecocks, for example, are very expensive in Colombia. Families cannot afford to buy a racket and some players do not even have suitable shoes. In addition, children living in the surrounding mountains cannot come to train because the cost of public transport is too high.
Jillie Cooper, a young high-level Scottish player, is currently there and is helping them. It was at her request that Solibad sent, in February 2015, rackets, clothing, shuttlecocks and shoes collected during the French Senior Championships in Aire Sur la Lys. The parents were moved to tears and the children had wonderful smiles of joy when they received this equipment.
The Solibad office has decided to officially integrate the "Medellin" project into our long-term action programs. We will continue our help by sending equipment, but also money so that about ten more poor children (living further away in the mountains) can join this club to get out of their environment a little and be able to envisage a more peaceful future.
At the end of March 2015, €1,500 was sent to Medellin to financially support this new program.
